johnathan edwards

johnathan edward's sermon uses vivid images to capture the attention of the audience so that they would be scared into conversion. he uses images like spiders, hands of an angry god, being held on a thread, spider web, fire, hell, an angry eye, and nothing to hold on to in order to amplify the posibility of what hell will be like if these people keep going in the direction they are.

Edward Taylor

thesis statement:
In the poem "Huswifery" Edward Taylor applies conceit, rhyme, and imagery to reveal his deep and devoted relationship to god through the metaphor of a spinning wheel.

Of Plymouth Plantation by William Bradford

Thesis:
In an excerpt of William Bradford's of Plymouth Plantation, although the puritans experience hardship in their voyage to America, in their arrival and ion their dealings with the Indians, they will maintain their reverence to god and to one another (their initial reason for leaving England).

Impressing Passage:
But presently, all on the sudden, they heard a great and strange cry, which they knew to be the same voices they heard in the night, though they varied their notes; and one of their company being abroad came running in and cried, "Men, Indians! Indians!" And withal, their arrows came flying amongst them. Their men ran with all speed to recover their arms, as by the good providence of God they did. In the meantime, of those that were there ready, two muskets were discharged at them, and two more stood ready in the entrance of their rendezvous but were commanded not to shoot till they could take full aim at them. And the other two charged again with-all speed, for there were only four had arms there, and defended the barricade, which was first assaulted. The cry of the Indians was dreadful, especially when they saw the men run out of the rendezvous toward the shallop to recover their arms, the Indians wheeling about upon them. But some running out with coats of mail on, and cutlasses in their hands, they soon got their arms land let fly amongst them and quickly stopped their violence. Yet there was a lusty man, and no less valiant, stood behind a tree within half a musket shot, and let his arrows fly at them; he was seen [to] shoot three arrows, which were all avoided. He stood three shots of a musket, till one taking full aim at him and made the bark or splinters of the tree fly about his ears, after which he gave an extraordinary shriek and away they went, all of them. They' left some to keep the shallop and followed them about a quarter of a mile and shouted once or twice, and shot off two or three pieces, and so returned. This they did that they might conceive that they were not afraid of them or any way discouraged.

What impressed me about this passage is that the puritans had just gotten to America and are already claiming that territory as theirs. They prove this by defeating the Indians on the Indian Territory as they are surprise attacked from the woods. The Indians had more of the advantage but the puritans were still able to get their weapons in time to defeat them. This shows that the puritans are already taking pride in their new land in not letting the natives drive them off.

Journal entry:
Last night we were attacked by Indians. It was a shocking sight and sound that surprised us all as they came running out of the forest with their arrows flying in front of them at me brothers that they were chasing. As soon as I could perceive what was happening, I grabbed my weapon and tried to shoot at as many I could. Once I looked to the side and someone had been hit in the arm by and arrow and it sent him to the ground. The sound and power of the muskets surprised the Indians and sent them fleeing into the woods. That was a very memorial night and we give all thanks to god who gave us strength in our first battle on a strange land.

Immigration in the U.S.A. has gotten so bad that it is almost like illegal immigrants have as many, if not more, rights and occupations than the American people. In this political cartoon, there is a flag outlined in the us of Mexico. this relates to the passage "Of Plymouth Plantation" because it is showing that the US mainly belongs to someone else now because the previous inhabitants let them take over like when the puritans began to win battles over the Indians and claim their territory. also, in the cartoon there is an American flag in a trash can along with a bunch of other trash. this further relates to the passage because it is showing that the Indians have to throw away their freedom due to the puritans. in conclusion, both examples show that previous ownership falls because they are not trying to protect their rights from intruders.

Anne Bradstreet

poem which most impressed me:
the poem by Anne Bradstreet which most impressed me was "upon the burning of my house". this passage most impressed me because it showed the two sides that Anne was struggling with in her puritan life, the need for earthly possessions vs. an entire puritan walk in life. she does this by talking about where the things she once possessed were placed and how she used them but then stopping herself to say that her real treasure is in heaven and she doesn't need those earthly things. Anne does this throughout the poem and it shows a deep struggle that will be hard to overcome.

journal entry:
dear journal, it has been about a week since my house burnt down. being the puritan that i am, i should not have worried about the things i lost in the fire but the pain dwells in me by the minute. when i had all of those things, it was easy to hide the desire for earthly things from the other puritan women, but now that it is all gone, i think they can see the agony i go through. i fear that i will be criticised for my need, even though i want to live a pure puritan life. although it will be hard, i must get through this and remind myself that my actual treasures are truly in heaven.

when rights are available for women in America, they take advantage of it and ask for millions of rights that they want. for example, in the political cartoon, there is a line of women in line with huge lists that say petition to congress. this relates to the poetry of Anne Bradstreet because she was one of the first women poets in America and is means a lot to be a women poets with their own poetry published(hence the huge list). also, in the cartoon there is a person sitting on a chair representing the congress. this relates to Anne Bradstreet because he is in America and Anne had her work published in America. these examples show that women's rights in America mean a lot in society.

This film making process has deepened my understanding of change throughout time and geography. I further understand he struggles that we had more back then in like the great depression where there was a lot of suffering compared to today where there is less suffering. I also further understand the difference of status through geography like as in some countries; there is a lot of suffering for more people everyday as compared to our country where there is less sadness and suffering.
